We received a call on November 12, 2018 from animal control in St Landry Parish Louisiana about a stray who had been rushed to an emergency vet. Clyde was all skin and bones and very sick but no one knew why. After many days in the hospital fighting for his life and many tests and exploratory surgery Clyde was diagnosed with Pythiosis also known as swamp cancer. Pythiosis is acquired from dirty water in the south and is almost always fatal but Clyde had different plans. He is one of the few that have survived without surgical removal of the lesion due to its location . Clyde was placed on a medical protocol to treat and manage his disease and sent to a foster home where he would be nursed back to health. Clyde not only survived but he thrived with proper prescribed nutrition and daily medication which he will need to continue the rest of his life. Clyde challenges were not yet done. Clyde tested positive for heart worm and had to sustain a 3 month protocol to rid his system of this preventable disease. Today, Clyde is a 68 lb typical basset and all signs of his disease are not present at this time and he is heartworm free. Clyde will require yearly Pythiosis testing along with his daily medication and near his vet who has done tons of research on this disease.
