The Flash Award

Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue is always focused on saving the hounds! Every hound is special and we choose to recognize some of our most extraordinary rescued dogs with the Flash Award. There are so many incredible stories but certain hounds come to us in horrible shape, needing extensive medical treatment for life threatening problems. We have hounds come to us after suffering years of neglect and abuse. Watching them heal and thrive is the true meaning of rescue. The Flash Award is given to an extraordinary hound who has: "Overcome adversity with courage, love, forgiveness and an unbreakable spirit."

2018 Flash Award Honoree: Norman

Rarely do we encounter a hound that has endured as much cruelty as Norman. For that, we are thankful! When TSBHR learned about a senior basset hound in Pennsylvania with his ears cut off, there was no hesitation in rescuing him. His owner had surrendered him with no explanation of why his ears had been cropped. Because he was also suffering with chronic severe skin allergies, we can only guess that is the reason his ears were cut off. Norman also had an eye infection and went through surgery to correct a painful eye disorder. He tolerated extensive allergy testing on his raw and swollen skin to find out the cause of this agonizing condition. In spite of all of this, his foster and adoptive mom, Val, described him as "wonderful with dogs and cats and a perfect gentleman. He loves hugs and kisses and just wants to be near you to have his head scratched." Norman was truly an extra special hound and he is extremely deserving of being the recipient of the 2018 Flash Award.

2017 Flash Award Honoree: Georgia

Sweet senior girl Georgia had a very long tale of woe, but she was a fighter! Georgia came from the streets of Alabama where she was a very scared dog who was picked up as a stray. She was emaciated, sickly, and suffering from a lifetime of neglect. Georgia suffered from a progressive eye disease and had laser surgery on both of her eyes. Georgia was diagnosed and treated for cancer 4 times! Her last diagnosis informed us that Georgia had lymphoma, a cancer with no cure. Georgia received treatment and continued to live a happy life. Her adoptive mom, Madalena, gave this sweet, loving hound the family she always wanted!

2016 Flash Award Honoree: Flash, The Wonder Dog

Flash the Basset Hound is the inspiration for the Flash Award, which was established in 2016 and is awarded each year at BassetFest to a deserving hound.

The motivation for this award, and the very first recipient of this award, is our very own Flash. Flash was rescued in 2013 after being shot by his owner in Kentucky. One leg had to be amputated and another leg was severely damaged, but that did not stop Flash from learning to love and forgive. Flash found his forever home with Sue, who says "he is just the happiest, most loving boy, with no mistrust or residual fear. He loves everyone he meets and doesn’t even flinch at loud noises, as you would expect from a dog who had been shot. When you consider what he’s been through and see how happy he is in spite of it all, he’s a lesson in resiliency." Flash was a survivor and an inspiration!
